DOOM BAR

AND THE PEOPLE BEHIND IT

We're marking Cask Ale Week by bringing you closer to the people behind Doom Bar, who help to make all of our cask beer so special.

AARON McCLURE, SHARP'S HEAD BREWER

What do you love about Doom Bar?

I love Doom Bar because of its balance of flavours, its easy drinking style, and its incredible consistency. It’s our number one beer, and the team and I work incredibly hard to produce the best pint with every brew. We are certainly cask ale specialists and Doom Bar encompasses everything they we know best about brewing great cask beer.

Why is cask beer so special?

Cask ale is beer in its purest form. Fresh from the brewery tanks our beer is packaged directly into Cask, No Filtration, No Pasteurisation, nothing is taken away or added to alter the beer flavour. Our ale yeast is still active in the cask, working, conditioning the beer, keeping it as fresh, and alive as it possibly could be. Just as it is in our brewery tanks.

ED HUGHES, SHARP'S BEER SOMMELIER

What do you love about Doom Bar?

It really is the perfectly balanced beer. Before I joined the Sharp's family I was part of the "tasting panel" at the brewery and I had an insight into the hard work from the brewers and the quality team to keep Doom Bar the most consistent cask ale out there. This is where I really fell in love with Doom Bar and joined the brewery after a year of being on the panel. Not only do I love the perfect balance of malt, sweetness, and hop bitterness, but it's also a beer that is super versatile as a food pairing beer. I've had Doom Bar in Michelin restaurants paired with lobster, oysters, and the finest seafood, and it's as equally perfectly paired with a scotch egg from your local pub.

Why is cask beer so special?

Cask is super special as we (here in the UK) are the home of cask ale. Doom Bar being the best selling means that we are custodians of our beer as well as the category and heritage of this beautiful style of beer. We fly the flag for 1000's years of brewing heritage from the great IPA's to come from Burton-upon-Trent to the stouts and porters that originated in London. Cask Ale is live, fresh, and needs to be nurtured from brewery to cellar. There's something very special that it's delicate and needs to be looked after and all the timing has to be right from the work from the brewers right to how the beer is poured by the bar person. Ultimately Cask Ale is unique and it's ours!

JAMES NICHOLLS, SHARP'S MARKETING CONTROLLER

What do you love about Doom Bar?

Everything. It's the perfect cask beer, that glowing amber hue, and amazing moreish flavour.  I love the brand too (no surprise there) the way it has shaken cask beer to its foundations and transformed the category. It's modern, relevant, and represents the very best of Sharp's and Cornwall.

Why is cask beer so special?

When served right there's no better beer to while away a few hours in one of our County & Country's amazing pubs.  Doom Bar, is the definitive cask ale.  I love its enticing hop aroma and crystal clear, alluring fiery amber color. I love the extraordinary complexity of flavour you only find with cask; the succulent balance of malty, biscuity sweetness countered by the crisp, bitter edge of the resinous hop all vying for your attention in a harmonious crescendo on your taste buds. The tickle of that bright tight bubbled foam as it nestles into your top lip, the texture and extra bite of the magical hop esters as they combine with the beer, and the mesmerizing lacing of the glass down to the end of the pint. For me it's uniquely delicious and the ultimately satisfying beer style. Take me to the pub.
