Special has been continually popular since its launch in 1996, achieving almost cult status in some parts of the country. Special was named 'Beer of the Festival' at Chelmsford (one the UK’s largest beer festivals) in 2009.

Head Brewer, Stuart Howe, says: "The Special Bitter is a classic English style of beer, copied all over the world. Sharp’s Special is a superb example of how to get the style just right. At 5% abv the drinker is looking for something with substance and depth but without sacrificing balance and drinkability. Some all-malt Special Bitters are akin to engine oil; thick, sticky and cloying. Cooler temperatures used in the mash tun, a robust bitterness and an exhaustive fermentation mean than Sharp’s Special has this impact allied to a dangerously moreish finish".

As the strongest beer in our cask range, a higher quantity of permium English malted barley is used in the creation of this excellent beer. Malted barley adds a distinctive sweetness to the flavour profile, which complements most desserts, especially those with a good measure of sugar such as treacle pudding. The sweet, roasted aroma also makes Special perfect with creamy, rich cheeses.

Taste Notes from Head Brewer Stuart Howe
"Delicious over-ripe fruit blends perfectly with inviting roasted notes. The mouthfeel is succulent with dried fruit, malt and a generous hop bitterness. The finish is lingering and warm with fruit and malt notes. For a strong ale Special is subtle and dangerously drinkable."
